Set your water baseline in one week

October 8, 2026 ยท 4 min read

A single reading tells you very little. A week of readings from the same source, taken the same way, gives you a baseline: the "normal" you compare everything else against.

Pick your sources

Choose one to three places you care about: the kitchen tap, the outlet of your filter or RO system, the well spigot, or the RV hookup. Give each a short name in your log booklet ("Kitchen", "RO", "Well").

Sample the same way every time

  • Use the included sample cup, rinsed with the water you're about to test.
  • Run the tap for the same amount of time before each sample.
  • Place the meter so the sample covers the sensing chamber to the depth in the instructions, and check for bubbles in the window.
  • Note the time of day. First-draw water in the morning can read differently from water that has been running.

What to write down

Date, time, source, the 9 readings (and the overall grade), and anything unusual: heavy rain, a new filter cartridge, plumbing work, a long trip away. These notes turn numbers into a record.

Repeat for a week

Take a reading once a day for seven days. Look at the spread for each indicator. That range is your baseline. After that, a weekly or monthly check is enough for most homes, plus an extra one whenever something changes.

Keep it comparable

Follow the calibration and cleaning instructions, keep the protective cap on between sessions, and re-check calibration if a reading jumps unexpectedly.
